The whole idea came about when owner Joe Markham was searching for an alternative chew toy for his German Shepard, Fritz, who had the bad habit of munching on rocks and other harmful items. While working on a Volkswagen Bus, Markham found a piece of hard rubber from a suspension and gave it to his furry friend. Fritz instantly took to his newly found toy, inspiring his owner, Joe, to begin experimenting with the material.
Six years, and many different rubber compounds later, Markham had produced a durable chew toy that he could sell to other pet lovers like himself.
Today, Kong toys come in many different sizes, shapes, and rubber types; red being for average chewers, pink or blue for puppies, purple for seniors, and black for tough chewers.
Their original chew toy, which they still offer, resembles a snowman-like body with a hollowed out center that can be stuffed with treats to make it more enjoyable for your pet. Kong also has a line of dental chews, balls, pull toys, squeakers, frisbees, and various other dog-related products. All of the toys are produced in Colorado and are sold in countries all around the world.
