Backyard BBQs, s’mores, fireworks and beach days — these are just a few of the ways Americans like to enjoy the long summer season each year. Of course, these activities tend to be enjoyable only when the outdoor conditions are favorable, like when the sky is clear during the day, and those pesky bugs are nowhere to be found at night. If the weather takes a turn and you find yourself indoors during the holiday weekend, there are still fun ways to celebrate our country’s birthday. These five patriotic movies range from funny to action-packed, offering a perfect source of entertainment when it’s raining (or even too hot) outside.

Independence Day (1996)

While celebrating our country’s freedom, you can watch actors Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum fight for theirs in the movie “Independence Day.” In this ’90s blockbuster hit, aliens invade Earth on July 4th, threatening worldwide destruction.

Top Gun (1986)

Watch Tom Cruise shine as Maverick in the beloved film, “Top Gun.” This movie, which features the ’80s hits like “Take My Breath Away” is an adventure-filled classic (with a romantic side as well) that tells a story about a fighter pilot competing to be the best flyer in the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School.

Forrest Gump (1994)

The beloved film “Forrest Gump” spans several decades, allowing it to depict numerous significant events, leaders and past times in American history. It’s a movie unlike any other, and can be watched over and over again without losing its charm.

The Sandlot (1993)

In “The Sandlot,” several young boys spend their summer falling in love with America’s favorite pastime: baseball. This heartwarming summer movie will fill you with nostalgia and the desire to be a kid once more.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

If you love superhero movies, turn on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Based on the Marvel comic book character, Captain America is set during WWII and tells the story of Steve Rogers, an American hero who saves the country from weapons of mass destruction.

Don’t let any unfavorable weather ruin your summer. Come rain or shine, you and your family will have a great summer this year with these movies ready to play.
