Sharpie: Permanently American

by Saturday, February 22, 2014

You’ve likely come across one of these markers in your lifetime. It’s probably even a household name to you. Can you guess what American-made product we’re talking about this time?

If you haven’t guessed by now, we are talking about the world-renowned Sharpie brand! Launched in the year 1964 by Sanford Ink Company, Sharpie has been a staple in the American stationary industry ever since.

Originally a name referring to a single permanent marker, the Sharpie brand has grown substantially over the years and now can be found on a variety of permanent and non-permanent pens and markers, as well as other office products. Manufactured in the great state of Illinois, their products are now sold in over 20 countries!

With their wide range of use and constant push to release new products and ink colors, the Sharpie brand is an American company that is here to stay.

I never knew that the marvelous, magical Sharpie was proudly made in America. I mean, I should have seen the writing on the wall, but perhaps the fumes were getting to my head. Sharpie markers hold a permanent place in my heart, as well as on my children’s furniture. Not only does Sharpie produce consistent, high-quality products, but this proudly American company has been providing public restroom reading material for as long as I can remember (we won’t say how long that is). If not for Sharpies, how would middle schoolers know who loved who? How would parents safeguard their children’s belongings while away at camp? How would women cover-up unsightly scratches on those irreplaceable black pumps? When archaeologists of the future begin excavating U.S. ruins, they will know one thing for sure; Americans LOVED to place their mark on everything. And nothing lives on quite like the mark of the classic, American-made, Sharpie.
